Eating in Season, Spring!

Spring has sprung! There’s clear blue skies and the sun is shining. This is definitely something to smile about. Some old-fashion things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat (Laura Ingles Wilder).

With the new season comes a new energy, which I think we all need right now.  A change in season brings a new range of delicious fruit and vegetables. I always advise eating in season and local if possible, it’s cheaper, more nutritionally beneficial, and means you can be more creative in the kitchen so you don’t get tired of the same meals.

A few favourites this season include:
Peaches
Plums
Mandarins
Strawberries
Artichokes
Broad Beans
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Leek
Silverbeet

I use this guide to see what is in season for Sydney and NSW.

This one is helpful for Australia-wide.

I also ask my local farmers what they recommend, what is out due to seasonal variance, unpredictable weather conditions, and therefore what is BEST right now!

Markets around Sydney that I love include  Carriageworks, which to my delight recently re-opened, and also Marrickville and Orange Grove/Leichhardt. For me it is the perfect way to start the weekend and get ahead for the following week.

Use this website to find farmers markets close to you.

On Saturday, I was able to pick up some beetroot, which is anti-inflammatory, supports detoxification and lowers blood pressure. I also got my hands on some pumpkins which are low GI and particularly rich in vitamin A, C and E, as well as beta-carotene, all of which have been found to play an important role in the health of our skin.  Vitamin E is an excellent antioxidant and acts together with vitamin C, helping to protect against sun damage and prevent dryness of the skin. Perfect for these warmer days ahead.

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful sunshine as much as I am!
